Review: Re-Read of The Magician King

Unlike the first book, this didn't hold up as well with a re-read. There were parts that were just as good, notably that last chapter. But there were huge chunks where it dragged more than I remember.

All said though, it's still a good book in a good series. Those chunky parts were likely due to middle book syndrome, as well as the fact that I'd read it before. But all of this was in preparation for the final volume in the trilogy, The Magician's Land.

The Trials of Empire by Richard Swan My rating: 4 of 5 stars I received an eARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. This really brings everything full circle and packs a punch, wrapping up the trilogy. Lansdale knows how to craft a story, with an instinctive grasp of character development. His language is such that he connects with readers and makes the task of reading an enjoyable escape. While all of the stories in this book fall into the "crime" category, this is a very loose grouping. There is such a mixed bag of offerings here, from the noir to the really freaking weird.
